When your inner world feels dim, this prayer asks God’s truth to light the way.
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,” (Proverbs 6:23, NIV).
SOMETHING TO PONDER
The road ahead was dark and foggy. Between the pouring rain and pounding thunder, my thoughts began to spin.
Where am I?
Am I going the right way?
What if a tornado hits my car?
What if I wreck?
Am I lost?
Though I was less than half an hour from my hometown, I was second-guessing every turn. Why? Because in the night, fog makes everything difficult to see. We don’t know what’s ahead, where we’re going, or how to move forward. Sometimes, the same thing can happen in our lives, too.
Spiritual fog feels like a prayer that’s flat. We’re talking to God, but hear nothing in reply. God doesn’t just feel distant, He feels absent. And Scripture? It’s confusing, dry, and dull. Have you been in this place?
On one hand, spiritual fog is normal. It isn’t failure, but rather a part of being human. But spiritual fogginess isn’t an excuse to stay where we are. Instead, it requires intentional reorientation.
In Proverbs 6:23, we read that God’s commands are a lamp to our feet. This means that He gives us step-by-step clarity for our paths through the guidance and direction of His Word.
We also see that His teaching is a light. Not only is it a light in our lives, but also in the lives of those we share His message with. And when we get off the path or stumble in the dark, He gently corrects us and places us on the right road.
You and I don’t need full, 100% clarity to keep going when things are foggy. Sometimes, this fog can even keep us more dependent on Him. But we do need just enough light to take the next step.
