Gateway Church, located in various parts of Texas and founded by Robert Morris, has been recognized for helping others connect with God, find community, and deepen their faith. A recent scandal, however, has put the church’s reputation in jeopardy.

In October of 2025, the Texas megachurch founder, Robert Morris, pleaded guilty to child sex abuse and was sentenced to 6 months in jail. The case stemmed from 55-year-old Cindy Clemishire, who said that the pastor abused her when she was just 12-years old. Though the abuse took place in the 1980s, Clemishire hoped that sharing her story now would “help lift up others’ shame and allow them to speak up.”

While Morris confessed to five counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child and agreed to a 10-year suspended sentence (including registering as a sex offender), he was released from Osage County jail in Oklahoma on Monday, March 30th, 2026, after just 6-months of time.

According to the Dallas Morning News and court documents, “Morris’ probationary supervision was transferred to the state of Texas, where he will serve the remainder of the 10-year sentence on probation. As part of the plea deal, he also agreed to pay $270,000 to the woman who accused him of abusing her as a child in the 1980s, Cindy Clemishire.”
