For the hard days that close with tears, this devotional reminds us of His enduring goodness.

TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (Psalm 107:1, NIV).

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Growing up, I struggled to understand how God was still good when my circumstances were not. After surviving countless rounds of verbal and emotional abuse, I felt like a broken rag doll. Tears streaked my floorboards and the hollow spaces of my soul. Maybe you can relate?

I used to read verses like Psalm 107 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and shudder. How could a good God allow suffering and command that we praise Him? Until I realized three things:

1. We live in a fallen world. This place is not our home.

2. God is good despite this fallen world.

3. We praise God in all circumstances, not for them.

Look at 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 this way: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (NIV). Did you catch it? God is still good in even now moments because we praise Him for who He is, not what we experience. This revelation changed everything for me. I stopped trying to find lessons in my suffering and realized that God can work all things for my good, not because hardships are good, but God alone is. And isn’t that a gift to serve a God that can use broken places to make something beautiful?
