Nothing Can Separate Us From His Love
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39, New International Version)
It was a warm spring morning. The birds were chirping, and geese and birds were flying high in murmuration. After my third restless night of sleep, the gentle sun peeked through my windows waking me an hour before my alarm.
Making my way out of bed, I opened to Romans 8:38 for the daily Scripture reading. Attempting to rub the sleep out of my eyes, my eyes blurred. But a simple phrase penetrated my soul: “Nothing can separate us from the love of God.”
The New Living Translation says it this way: “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39, New Living Translation).

There is one thing that is not mentioned in this verse that CAN separate us from the love of God, and that is our choice. Serving God is a choice. Loving God is a choice. And the Scriptures clearly tell us that He will never leave or forsake us…so long as we never (choose) to leave or forsake Him. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” If we choose not to keep any of His commandments, we are choosing not to love Him. Or more precisely, we are choosing to love something else more than Him. And this will in fact separate us from His love. Does this mean that God stops loving us? No, no more than you would stop loving your child if they were to die. But just as a deceased child can no longer avail themselves of that parental love that they had while they were alive. Neither can we avail ourselves of the love of God if we die spiritually, which is what happens when we disobey. It is time that people awaken to the fact that one cannot live any old way and still abide in His love. One cannot pick and choose which commandments of God to obey and ignore the rest, while still professing to be His child. Our world and society are in a terrible state, in large part because to many people have stopped allowing God to mold them into His image, and instead are trying to mold Him into what they want Him to be. God’s commandments are not grievous, in fact they were designed to help us and protect us. May God help us to ever abide in His love by choosing to obey Him in all points!

> Daniel FowlerVery true, Daniel, and I appreciate your perspective! Thank you for sharing! I also do believe that God can still speak to those who’ve hardened their hearts, however, and He still cares for and loves those who’ve lost their way. But it is ultimately a choice, as you said, to follow and serve Him. I love the parent example!

Thank you Amber, and thank God, all my inspiration comes from Him. I just messaged you on FB as I was not sure if my comment posted on here when I wrote it. I find the story of how you came by your name very interesting as it closely mirrors how my eldest daughter was named. There are other things in your life that bear similarities to mine as well, but it didn’t look like you had been on there for awhile. I do want you to know that my heart goes out to you in your struggles and that I am praying for you.
