Depression. A mental health disorder characterized by persistent discouraged moods or a loss of interest in liveliness, causing significant impairment in daily life.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression. At its best, depression is often disguised by anxiety, a busy lifestyle, or hundreds of other coping mechanisms that avoid its presence altogether. At its worst, this troubling feeling of despair can lead to self-harm, intrusive thoughts, and suicide.

While I have never struggled with this worrisome darkness to the point of self-destruction, I have watched countless family members attempt its luring vices and reside in shame when their act was not successful. I have struggled with self-harm of orthorexia and anorexia that left me shallow in a puddle of grief, desperation, hopelessness, and anxiety.

In those times of hurt and confusion, the Lord often led me to Scripture and worship that elevated His Word above the noise of everything else. It’s my prayer that these ten powerful songs will challenge your depression today, pulling you from the brink of darkness and setting you free in the beauty of His glorious light.

1) Unraveling- Cory Asbury-

I’m coming apart at the seams

And everyone’s pulling at me

And I am unraveling

The smile isn’t quite what it seems

But it does well to hide what’s beneath

All the pressure is staggering

When life seems uncertain, depression can feel staggering and hindering to our faith. We feel as if we’ve come undone, and no matter what we do, our walk in this world is crippling. Yet, when our world is falling apart, that is when Christ is in the business of pulling everything together.

Know this, the God of the Universe, both Heavens and earth, sees and controls all. Even when life may be figuratively unraveling like a ball of yarn falling from the seams, or crumbling at your fingertips, hold on tightly to Him.

Joshua 2:11b praises, “The Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.” He sees every loose end and is sure to sew it up because He’s sewing into you.

2) Worn- Tenth Avenue North-

I’m tired

I’m worn

My heart is heavy

From the work it takes to keep on breathing

Feeling worn, ragged, tired, and old is something most of us have thought about at some period in our lives. I believe the age-old question of 2020, for instance, has been, “Why am I so tired all of the time?” At the core of our exhaustion is a weak and weary soul in need of a peace that only the Father can give.

Philippians 4:6-7 declares, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Our Heavenly Father knows every anxious thought, and though our hearts are heavy, He will give us rest when we come to Him (Matthew 11:28).
